Celebrate Christmas in Edinburgh| TOP 7 things to do in December 2023

We are slowly approaching one of the most exciting months for Scotland – December. I particularly love this time of the year as the city lights up with a million fairy lights and all the shops play Christmas music. If you find yourself celebrating christmas in Edinburgh, here are some suggestions for what to do and see this year to make your scottish experience more memorible.

Visit Christmas Markets

Edinburgh has several beautiful Christmas markets full of magical stalls and delicious food courts (Oh, that devilish mac and cheese). To find this winter wonderland, simply follow the magic lights. If you are not in the mood to wander, then head to Princess St, St Andrews Square, or West George st to find the main Christmas markets this season. Dress warmly, grab some spicy mulled wine from the vendor, and treat yourself to a unique souvenir from Scotland.

Pro Tip: The markets get really busy, especially closer to the festive time, and sometimes you may need to queue to enter. Also, can’t emphasise enough, dress warmly, as winter in Scotland can be pretty cold.

Grab Your Ice Skates

Another ultra-fun thing to do duirng christmas in Edinburghis outdoor ice skating. You can bring your own skates, or you are free to hire at the rink. Ice, Christmas music, and lights create this special ambiance that makes you believe in the power of winter magic. You can find the ice rink at the West George st christmas market. The price for this delightful pastime is between £10.00-£14.00 (if you are a resident, bring some proof and get 20% off).

Pro Tip: Don’t worry if you don’t know how to skate. Edinburgh Ice rink offers an ice skate support device ( extra £5.00) that would help you to stay on the ground.

Say Hello to Santa

Have you been naughty or nice this year? Let’s see what Mr. Claus has to say about that. When celebrating Christmas in Edinburgh with kids, this experience can definitely be a highlight of the trip. There are several locations in Edinburgh that I would recommend where your little ones could have an opportunity to meet the old man himself.

For storytelling by Santa, head to St Andrews Square, where you will find Mr. Claus’s wee residence. One session lasts for 20 minutes where Santa will sit down with kids and read classical Christmas stories. Check the official website for more info.

Another popular spot for meet and greet with Claus’s Family is at Edinburgh Zoo, where visitors can join probably the most fancy Mr. and Mrs. Claus in Scotland for breakfast. The grotto runs until 8 pm, and tickets have to be booked in advance. Here is the link for you.

I would also like to mention two other grottos in Scotland that I had a chance to visit, therefore I am recommending it for those who are traveling to Fife (Dunfermline or Kirkcaldy).

  1. Kingsgate Shopping Centre, Dunfermline
  2. Mercat Centre, Kirkcaldy

Pro Tip: Santa loves poetry, so read a poem or two. Ho Ho Ho.

Treat Yourself with Traditional Whiskey Toddy

Whiskey Toddy is the national drink of Scotland that is a perfect treat for anyone who likes whiskey but can’t have it neat. The drink consists of whiskey, lemon, honey, and cloves and is a great way to warm up or scare the cold or flu away. Best places for this blessing liquid: The Black Cat on Rose St and Devil’s Advocate on the Royal Mile.

Pro Tip: If you are looking for some fancy cocktails, speakeasy, and quirky bars, then I wrote an article about secret bars in Edinburgh. Click here to read the article.

Christmas at the Botanics

Another fabulous event not to miss out on this December is Christmas Botanical Lights. Located in Edinburgh Royal Botanical Gardens, this is a truly stunning trail. You will have an opportunity to walk the trail and enjoy special effects, lasers, and lights. But again, remember to wear appropriate footwear and outerwear; it’s definitely not a high heels-friendly walk.

Pro Tip: Check the weather forecast to avoid walking in the rain (unless this is something you are into).

Have Drinks or Dinner at Dome

Remember the hotel where Kevin from Home Alone 2 stayed when he got lost in New York? If you like that kind of Christmas vibe, then you should definitely visit Dome this Christmas. The Dome is well-known for its grand Christmas decorations and festive atmosphere, a great spot for a special occasion. Did I mention they do an amazing afternoon tea experience that would make you feel like a duchess? Check out my other post, where I rated my afternoon tea at Dome.

Pro Tip: Book in advance to avoid queues. The Dome gets really busy, especially in the evening.

Visit Christmas Specialised Shops

Lastly, don’t forget to get yourself a little festive souvenir from Scotland that would always remind you of your Christmas in Edinburgh adventures. The Nutcracker Christmas Shop and Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe are open all year round and specialise only in Christmas. The place itself is very inviting and cozy, and you can find plenty of cool things to take home with you.

Pro Tip: Get some Christmas bulbs; those make perfect souvenirs and reminders of your Christmas in Edinburgh.
